Britain to provide aerial refuelling support to Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks

Britain has committed to providing aerial refuelling support to the Saudi military as the kingdom faces intensified attacks from Houthi forces in Yemen. The agreement, announced as Prime Minister Andy Burnham travelled to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, will see the Royal Air Force conduct air-to-air refuelling operations for Saudi aircraft over a limited period.

The support comes amid a resurgence in hostilities between the Houthis and Yemen's Saudi-backed government. The Iranian-aligned rebel group has escalated operations significantly, launching missiles and drone strikes deep into Saudi territory, including a major attack on Riyadh on Saturday that was intercepted by air defences. The Houthis have also declared a blockade of shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, targeting Saudi-linked commercial vessels and attacking oil infrastructure within the kingdom, the world's largest crude oil exporter.

Recent Houthi advances in Yemen have strengthened their position considerably. The rebels captured the strategic Red Sea port city of Mokha and seized key islands earlier this month, giving them enhanced ability to project power and maintain their maritime blockade. These territorial gains represent a significant shift in the conflict dynamics.

Burnham indicated that the refuelling agreement would remain under review and is not an open-ended commitment. The move reflects growing international concern over the humanitarian impact of the Yemen conflict and regional security implications of unchecked Houthi capabilities.
