Britannia Industries reported a robust 15.6% surge in second-quarter revenue, outpacing market expectations, yet the gains were offset by a significant contraction in profit margins, according to results filed with stock exchanges.

The expansion in topline sales underscored steady demand for the company's portfolio of biscuits, bread, cakes and dairy products across Indian markets. However, the margin pressure emerged as a critical concern for investors, with the firm grappling with elevated costs across its operations.

Material consumed, purchases of stock-in-trade, and changes in inventory levels climbed to Rs 3,378 crore during the quarter, squeezing operating margins despite the healthy revenue growth. The combination of higher input costs and inventory adjustments offset gains from increased sales volumes, reflecting persistent inflationary pressures on raw materials and production expenses.

The results highlight the ongoing challenge facing FMCG manufacturers in India, where demand recovery has not kept pace with cost inflation. Industry analysts have pointed to elevated prices for commodities, packaging materials and freight as headwinds affecting profitability across the sector.

Britannia's margin compression underscores the delicate balance manufacturers face between maintaining pricing discipline and protecting consumer demand in a competitive fast-moving consumer goods market.
