A British-Indian businessman has been stripped of his OBE (Order of the British Empire) following allegations of misconduct as a landlord, marking a rare forfeiture of the prestigious honour.
Nirpal Singh Riat contested the allegations in a statement to media, characterizing them as fabricated. However, the honours forfeiture committee, which operates under the UK Cabinet Office, proceeded with withdrawing his honour after receiving representations from a local councillor in Hounslow.
Riat's legal representatives submitted a formal dispute to the forfeiture committee challenging the claims against him. According to Riat, his lawyer's response to the committee went unanswered, leaving him without opportunity for substantive engagement with the process.
The forfeiture of an OBE is an uncommon occurrence and typically follows serious allegations of misconduct that undermine the values associated with the honour. The honours system recognizes outstanding achievement and service, and removal from it represents a significant reputational consequence.
The case highlights ongoing scrutiny of property management practices in the UK and the mechanisms available to hold honour recipients accountable for conduct that may fall short of public expectations.
