British racecourse fined for transporting injured jockey in horsebox

Sedgefield Racecourse in County Durham breached multiple safety protocols when it transported an injured jockey to hospital using a horsebox rather than emergency medical services, a disciplinary panel of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has determined.

The incident took place during racing in March. A BHA panel found that the racecourse had failed to comply with five general instructions designed to ensure the safety and welfare of riders. The £6,500 fine reflects the severity of the safety lapses identified during the inquiry.

Proper emergency procedures at racecourses require that injured jockeys receive immediate medical attention through established ambulance services and emergency protocols. The use of alternative transport methods, particularly livestock vehicles, can delay critical care and violate established safety standards in equestrian sports.

The BHA's regulatory framework requires racecourses to maintain comprehensive emergency response systems and adhere strictly to safety guidelines. This disciplinary action underscores the authority's commitment to enforcing these standards across British racing venues. Sedgefield Racecourse has accepted the findings of the disciplinary panel.
