BRS accuses Congress, BJP of fueling political defections nationwide

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has intensified its criticism of the Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party, asserting that both national parties bear primary responsibility for the epidemic of defections plaguing Indian politics. Party leaders contend that the poaching of elected representatives has become a systematic strategy employed by the two organizations to expand their political footprint.

According to BRS representatives, the practice undermines democratic principles and destabilizes state assemblies by encouraging legislators to abandon their original party affiliations in pursuit of ministerial positions and personal advancement. The party points to recent instances of large-scale defections across various states as evidence of a coordinated approach by Congress and BJP to weaken regional political formations.

The BRS, which has emerged as a significant political force in Telangana, has made combating defection a central theme of its political messaging. Party functionaries argue that such political opportunism erodes voter confidence in democratic institutions and diverts attention from developmental work.

Neither Congress nor BJP has immediately responded to the accusations. The defection issue remains contentious across Indian politics, with multiple parties advocating for stronger anti-defection legislation and enforcement mechanisms to check the practice.
