The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has leveled fresh accusations against the Congress-led Telangana government, claiming it has allowed Andhra Pradesh to illegally divert significant volumes of Krishna river water. The regional party contends that the state's ruling dispensation has demonstrated a marked lack of vigilance in safeguarding Telangana's entitlements to the shared water resource.
The BRS, which governed Telangana until the Congress victory in recent elections, argues that the incumbent administration has failed to take adequate steps to prevent the neighbouring state from exploiting Krishna water beyond its allocated share. The party has framed the issue as a critical failure of governance affecting the state's agricultural and drinking water needs.
The Krishna river, originating in Maharashtra and flowing through Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh before merging with the Bay of Bengal, is subject to multiple interstate water-sharing agreements. Disputes over water allocation between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have remained contentious since Telangana's formation in 2014.
The Congress government has not publicly responded to the BRS allegations. Water resource management between the two states continues to be governed by agreements mediated through central authorities and interstate commissions, though tensions periodically flare over diversion and usage practices.
