Buddhist leaders pledge intervention as Colombo protest suspended

The satyagraha protest at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo has been temporarily suspended after senior Buddhist leaders committed to intervening on behalf of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, according to an announcement made yesterday afternoon.

Venerable Ulapane Sumangala Thera disclosed the decision to media, stating that the Mahanayake Theras of the Siam, Amarapura, and Ramañña Nikayas have pledged their efforts to resolve the matter. The move came after consultations among Buddhist clergy regarding the detained monk's situation.

The temporary halt to the protest reflects confidence in high-level ecclesiastical intervention, though specific details regarding the timeline for securing the monk's release remain unclear. The suspension suggests ongoing negotiations between Buddhist leadership and relevant authorities.

The satyagraha had drawn attention to concerns within the Buddhist community regarding Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera's detention. Officials have not yet provided additional comment on the matter.
