KUALA LUMPUR — Moviegoers and theatre enthusiasts in Malaysia's Federal Territories will benefit from a full exemption on entertainment duty for local productions under the 2027 Budget, a move aimed at boosting the domestic creative industry.
Tickets for Malaysian films and theatre performances staged in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya will be exempted from entertainment duty, removing a cost burden from audiences while supporting local content creators and performers.
Beyond the ticket exemption, the government has allocated RM130 million towards the broader creative sector in Budget 2027. The funding is intended to nurture talent development, enhance production capabilities and strengthen Malaysia's position as a regional creative hub.
The initiative reflects growing government support for the local entertainment and arts industries, which have faced challenges in recent years. By reducing ticket prices through duty exemptions and investing in sector infrastructure, authorities aim to increase public engagement with homegrown content while creating more employment opportunities in film, theatre and related creative fields.
Industry observers noted the move could encourage greater investment in local film and theatre productions, potentially elevating the quality and quantity of Malaysian content available to audiences.
