Budget 2027 sweeteners won't sway voters, says opposition leader Hamzah

KUALA LUMPUR — Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has downplayed the impact of Budget 2027's relief measures, contending that the government's fiscal package will fail to determine voting patterns in the forthcoming general election.

Addressing parliament, Hamzah suggested that the budget allocations, while presented as voter incentives, lack the substance needed to shift electoral sentiment significantly. He argued that the measures are insufficiently targeted or comprehensive to sway the electorate's voting behaviour in the ruling coalition's favour.

The opposition leader's remarks underscore ongoing political divisions over the government's budgetary priorities and their effectiveness. Hamzah indicated that the opposition views the current fiscal approach as strategically disadvantageous for the government, potentially creating openings for opposition campaigns to gain traction among voters.

As Malaysia approaches its next general election, budget allocations have become a focal point of political contestation, with both ruling and opposition parties scrutinising spending priorities and their political ramifications.
