Budget boost alone won't fix Malaysia's railway woes, warns expert

Recent budget allocations for Malaysia's railway sector will fall short of addressing systemic issues unless paired with robust operational management, according to transport industry analyst Rahman Hussin.

The consultant's assessment underscores growing concerns that financial injections alone cannot resolve the persistent challenges facing the nation's rail network. Prasarana Malaysia and Keretapi Tanah Air (KTMB) have both faced criticism over service reliability, maintenance standards, and customer satisfaction in recent years.

Hussin emphasized that the planned expenditure on Prasarana's overhaul programme and procurement of new train sets for KTMB must be complemented by stringent operational discipline across both operators. Without such measures, he suggested, the funds risk being deployed inefficiently.

The remarks highlight the broader debate within Malaysia's transport sector about whether infrastructure investment and fleet modernization can succeed without corresponding improvements in management practices, staff training, and accountability mechanisms.

Rail operators will face mounting pressure to demonstrate tangible service enhancements as public scrutiny intensifies over how government funding is utilized in the sector.
