Building explosion near Athens Acropolis kills one, leaves five missing

Emergency services responded to the explosion in central Athens, which reduced the residential building to rubble. Rescue operations began immediately as teams searched through debris for survivors and those reported missing in the aftermath of the blast.

Local officials confirmed that the property functioned as a holiday rental accommodation at the time of the incident. Among those unaccounted for are multiple United States citizens and at least one United Kingdom national, according to preliminary reports from Greek authorities.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the explosion. Structural engineers were expected to assess the damaged building to establish whether the blast resulted from a gas leak, maintenance accident, or other factors.

The incident occurred in one of Athens' most visited districts, home to the ancient Acropolis and numerous archaeological sites. Authorities cordoned off the area surrounding the explosion while search and rescue operations continued throughout the day.
