MARAMAG, Bukidnon — Authorities in Bukidnon are intensifying pest management efforts across approximately 1,500 hectares of sugarcane plantations affected by red-striped soft scale insect infestations. The Bukidnon Provincial Task Force, led by Governor Rogelio Neil Roque, has treated more than 65 percent of the affected area using biocontrol agents, marking a significant step in the agricultural response to the outbreak.
The red-striped soft scale insect poses a substantial threat to sugarcane production in the province, with the potential to damage crops before the critical 2026-2027 milling season commences in November. The task force initiative reflects growing recognition of biological pest control methods as an effective alternative to chemical interventions, particularly in protecting large-scale agricultural operations.
The biocontrol approach leverages naturally occurring organisms to manage pest populations without compromising soil health or environmental integrity. Industry stakeholders and government officials are monitoring treatment progress closely, with the aim of achieving full containment across all infested fields well ahead of the upcoming milling season.
Sugarcane production remains a key agricultural sector in Bukidnon, and successful pest management is critical to maintaining crop yields and supporting the region's farming communities. Officials have urged continued vigilance and cooperation from farmers in reporting any new infestations or areas requiring additional treatment.
