Bulacan halts construction work during peak heat to protect workers

CITY OF MALOLOS—Provincial authorities in Bulacan have directed all construction contractors to enforce daily health breaks during the hottest parts of the day as the region grapples with severe El Niño weather patterns. The measure aims to safeguard workers from heatstroke and other heat-related ailments that pose significant health risks during extended outdoor work.

Bulacan Provincial Engineer Glen Reyes issued the directive to all building contractors managing ongoing infrastructure projects under the provincial government. The advisory includes recommendations to adjust working schedules and provide adequate rest periods during peak temperature hours, reflecting growing concerns about worker safety amid the prevailing weather conditions.

The move affects approximately 1,500 workers engaged in various provincial infrastructure initiatives. Authorities stressed the importance of implementing preventive measures to ensure the wellbeing of the workforce while maintaining project progress during the extended dry season.

The initiative underscores the provincial government's commitment to occupational health and safety standards during periods of extreme weather. Similar heat mitigation protocols have been adopted by other regional governments across the country in response to the intensified El Niño phenomenon affecting Southeast Asia.
