Bulacan Residents Protest Flood Control Corruption Amid Rising Waters

MANILA, Philippines — Approximately 500 residents, farmers and fisherfolk gathered in Bulacan on Monday to voice their concerns over irregularities in flood-control initiatives and a reclamation project they claim has worsened flooding conditions in the province. The protesters traversed flooded areas to deliver their message amid ongoing water levels affecting the region.

Bulacan, situated in the northwestern portion of Metro Manila's periphery, has long struggled with severe seasonal flooding. Local communities have increasingly questioned how flood-control funds are being allocated and implemented, citing the persistence of inundation despite numerous infrastructure projects undertaken in recent years.

The demonstration also targeted a reclamation development initiative in the area, with residents alleging the project has altered natural water drainage patterns and intensified flooding in surrounding communities. Environmental and agricultural groups joined the protest, expressing concern over impacts to farmland and fishing grounds.

The gathering reflects growing frustration among provincial residents over what they view as inadequate flood management strategies and transparency issues in project implementation.
