Business losses alone not criminal, Anwar clarifies on corporate accountability

SHAH ALAM — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has drawn a clear line between acceptable business outcomes and criminal conduct, saying that companies operating at a loss should not automatically face legal consequences. Speaking in Shah Alam, Anwar stressed the importance of differentiating between commercial difficulties and intentional wrongdoing. He noted that while business losses are a normal part of corporate operations, deliberate fraud, abuse of authority, and embezzlement—locally termed 'sakau'—warrant decisive action from law enforcement and regulatory bodies. The Prime Minister's remarks come as Malaysia continues to strengthen corporate governance standards and combat financial misconduct across both public and private sectors. Authorities, Anwar indicated, should focus their investigative resources on cases where evidence suggests deliberate criminal activity rather than targeting companies facing legitimate financial challenges. The distinction underscores the government's approach to balancing business-friendly policies with zero tolerance for corruption and fraud.
