B.R. Shetty, the prominent Indian business magnate, has escalated a financial dispute by filing a massive civil suit against Bank of Baroda in court. The legal action seeks $5 billion in direct damages and $5 billion in consequential damages on a joint and several liability basis against the banking institution.

According to the plaint filed in October 2026, Shetty has also demanded interest accrual at 18 percent per annum on the claimed damages. The suit represents one of the largest civil claims filed against a major Indian bank in recent times, with the total claim value exceeding Rs 1.44 lakh crore at current exchange rates.

The lawsuit underscores growing tensions between high-net-worth individuals and financial institutions over alleged contractual breaches and business disputes. Bank of Baroda, one of India's largest public sector banks, has not yet publicly responded to the legal challenge.

Details regarding the specific grievances and contractual matters underlying the claim remain to be fully disclosed through court proceedings. Legal experts suggest the case may take considerable time to adjudicate given the quantum of damages sought and complexity likely involved.
