The Cabinet has formally approved the signing of a bilateral visa exemption agreement with Thailand, marking a significant step toward easier travel between the two nations.
Under the accord, Sri Lankan and Thai nationals holding valid ordinary passports will be permitted to enter, exit, and transit through each other's territories without requiring a visa for ordinary travel purposes. The agreement represents a reciprocal arrangement designed to facilitate tourism and people-to-people exchanges between Colombo and Bangkok.
Travellers from either country will be authorised to remain for a maximum of 30 days per visit under the visa-free arrangement. The agreement applies specifically to holders of ordinary passports, with separate provisions governing official and diplomatic passport holders.
The approval paves the way for formal signing of the bilateral accord, which is expected to streamline travel procedures and reduce bureaucratic delays for citizens of both nations seeking to visit for leisure, business, or other non-employment purposes.
This development is anticipated to strengthen tourism ties and commercial links between Sri Lanka and Thailand, two key destinations in South and Southeast Asia.
