The Union Cabinet has approved modifications to the Agnipath scheme, permitting up to 75 per cent of Agniveers to extend their service by two years beyond the initial four-year contract term. The policy revision addresses persistent concerns about career progression and tenure limitations that emerged following the scheme's introduction in 2022. Under the amended framework, Agniveers who complete their extended service become eligible for consideration into regular armed forces positions, subject to selection and prescribed qualifications. This pathway creates enhanced opportunities for career continuity among the majority of recruits who would otherwise have exited the military after four years. The Cabinet's decision reflects efforts to balance the fiscal efficiency underlying Agnipath's design—which emphasizes shorter recruitment cycles—with servicemembers' demands for substantive long-term career options. The move comes following considerable pressure from recruit organisations and defence analysts who cited limited employment prospects as a significant drawback of the original scheme. Defence officials are expected to issue detailed guidelines covering selection protocols, eligibility criteria, and implementation schedules for the tenure extension in the near term.
