Cable excavation works blamed for Sungai Kim Kim discolouration
Submarine cable installation works that extended to depths of five metres have been identified as the cause of white discolouration in Sungai Kim Kim, according to a state official.

The underwater excavation activities triggered sediment disturbance in the river, resulting in the visible colour change that alarmed residents and environmental observers in the affected area.
The cable-laying project required deep excavation works that penetrated to approximately five metres below the river bed, the exco member confirmed. Such extensive digging operations in aquatic environments can disrupt sediment layers and cause temporary water discolouration as particles become suspended in the water column.
The incident has drawn attention to construction practices in sensitive water bodies and the need for proper environmental management during infrastructure projects. Authorities have not yet specified when the water quality is expected to normalise or what additional measures may be implemented to monitor the situation.
Sungai Kim Kim, located in Johor, has previously been at the centre of environmental concerns, making the latest development a matter of public interest. The state government is expected to provide further updates on monitoring efforts and any remedial actions deemed necessary.
