CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela — Labor representatives in Cagayan Valley have called for a P100 increase to the basic daily wage for private-sector workers, escalating calls for improved compensation in the region. The proposal was presented during a September 24 public hearing held at the Isabela provincial capitol, where the competing interests of workers and employers were aired before government officials.
Currently, the minimum daily wage for private-sector workers in the region stands at P500. Worker advocates argue that the proposed increase is necessary to help employees keep pace with rising living costs and maintain adequate purchasing power.
Employers have taken a contrasting position, opposing the wage hike and advocating for the maintenance of existing minimum wage levels. Business representatives contended that raising labor costs could strain operations, particularly for smaller enterprises, and potentially affect competitiveness in the region.
