CALAPAN CITY — The Catholic community in Oriental Mindoro is grieving the loss of Father Rudolf Holzgartner, a longstanding member of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) who played a crucial role in shaping the priesthood in the region. The German-born missionary died Wednesday in his home country after decades of service to the Church in the Philippines.
Holzgartner spent more than five decades at Saint Augustine Seminary in Calapan City, where he was instrumental in the formation and education of successive classes of Filipino priests. His contributions to the seminary extended beyond classroom instruction, as he became a spiritual mentor and guide to countless seminarians throughout his tenure.
Bishop Cuevas, the head of the Calapan diocese, issued a statement mourning Holzgartner's passing and acknowledging his exemplary dedication to priestly formation. The bishop characterized the late missionary as embodying the values and commitment to service that define the SVD charism and the broader mission of the Catholic Church in the Philippines.
Father Holzgartner's legacy continues through the numerous priests he helped ordain and train, many of whom now serve parishes and dioceses throughout the country. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in the institutional history of Catholic seminary education in Oriental Mindoro.
