Calcutta High Court refuses urgent hearing on September 2 protest plea
The Calcutta High Court has declined an urgent hearing request for a petition seeking permission to hold a demonstration over alleged electoral roll deletions during the Special Revision exercise. The court said the matter would be taken up according to the regular schedule once the petition is formally filed.

Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya rejected the request for expedited hearing on Friday when a lawyer representing the organisation Sangrami Ganamancha sought leave to file the petition and requested urgent consideration.
The organisation is seeking permission to conduct a demonstration on September 2 with an expected participation of over 5,000 people. The planned protest aims to draw attention to the deletion of names from electoral rolls during the Special Revision exercise and lengthy delays in hearing appeals before tribunals.
Questioning the timing of the petition, Justice Bhattacharyya noted that petitions must be filed within reasonable timeframes to warrant urgent hearing. "It is not a matter of right for a petition to be heard urgently if it is not filed in time," the judge observed.
The court clarified that once the petition is formally filed, it will be heard in the normal course of proceedings without prejudice to the merits of the case.
