Brothers Austin and Colton Paulhus, founders of Anchored Tiny Homes, now face 35 felony charges each following a wave of consumer complaints spanning 18 California counties. The charges stem from allegations that the company accepted substantial deposits from customers without delivering promised backyard dwelling units.
Among the affected customers is a retired nurse who paid over $40,000 in 2023 for a residential structure that was never constructed. Her case represents one of more than 200 formal complaints filed against the company, indicating a pattern affecting customers across a wide geographic area.
The investigation revealed systematic issues within the operation, including incomplete construction projects and failure to refund customer payments. Property owners have been left in financial limbo, with little clarity on recovery prospects for their invested funds.
The case underscores emerging challenges within California's alternative housing market, where growing demand for affordable residential solutions has created opportunities for fraudulent operators. Authorities continue investigating whether additional charges may be warranted. The brothers remain in custody pending legal proceedings.
