California Governor Gavin Newsom launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump on Wednesday, accusing him of making reckless statements about national security threats. Newsom's criticism centred on Trump's comments in which the president appeared to suggest that Iran could attack Los Angeles, remarks the California Democrat said revealed troubling judgment.
Newsom described Trump as "deranged and dangerous," arguing that such statements undermine American security and credibility on the world stage. The governor emphasised that loose talk about major cities being vulnerable to foreign attack was irresponsible and alarming coming from the nation's chief executive.
The exchange reflects deepening tensions between the Republican administration and Democratic-led states over national security policy. Newsom has positioned himself as a prominent voice among Democratic critics of Trump's approach to foreign policy and crisis management.
The incident adds to broader political friction between Washington and California over defence priorities, emergency preparedness, and the handling of security threats. Both sides have accused each other of politicising national security matters rather than working cooperatively to protect American citizens.
