California launches major wetland restoration project on Webb Tract

California is moving forward with a $28 million restoration project on Webb Tract, a significant undertaking designed to address persistent land subsidence in the region while delivering multiple environmental benefits. The initiative will convert approximately 2,800 acres into a mosaic of wetlands, upland habitat, and rice cultivation areas, creating a landscape that balances agricultural productivity with ecological restoration.

The multi-benefit approach is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance carbon storage capacity in the soil. By restoring wetland areas and maintaining rice cultivation alongside native habitat, the project aims to create an ecosystem that supports both environmental goals and local agricultural interests.

Planting efforts are scheduled to commence on October 7, 2026, with officials prioritizing the introduction of native species adapted to the region. Among the species slated for restoration is Bay Miwok evening primrose, an indigenous plant central to the project's ecological objectives.

The Webb Tract project represents a comprehensive response to subsidence challenges that have affected California's inland regions, where land elevation loss has created vulnerabilities to flooding and water management issues. By restoring natural hydrological functions and vegetation, the initiative seeks to stabilize landscapes while generating measurable climate and biodiversity benefits.
