California seeks final funds to transform oil field into nature preserve

The West Coyote Hills property in Fullerton has been a flashpoint for environmental and development interests for more than 50 years. After decades of pressure to convert the land for commercial use, conservationists have worked tirelessly since the late 1990s to preserve the ecologically significant site as permanent open space.

California state officials have greenlit a comprehensive purchase plan valued at $95 million, with $75 million already secured through public funding commitments. The acquisition represents a major milestone in efforts to protect the site's unique habitat and prevent further industrial development on the land.

Preservation advocates are now focused on closing a $20 million funding gap to finalize the purchase and establish the property as a protected nature preserve and public park. Once completed, the transaction would permanently safeguard the site from future development pressures and ensure public access to the natural area.
