Caller names to display on Indian mobile screens from November 1

Mobile phone users across India will see caller names appear on their screens from November 1 onwards, following a directive issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The new protocol will operate in two scenarios to ensure maximum caller identification coverage.

When a recipient has stored the caller's number in their phone's contact list, the saved name will automatically display on the screen. For calls from numbers not saved locally, the recipient's device will show the name as recorded in the caller's telecom operator's records, providing an additional layer of identification.

The implementation represents a significant step toward improving call transparency across India's telecommunications network. By enabling users to identify callers through either personal contacts or operator-maintained registries, the measure is expected to reduce confusion from unknown numbers and enhance security for mobile subscribers.

Telecom operators have been directed to ensure their systems are ready for the November 1 rollout. The move aligns with broader efforts by Indian regulators to modernize the country's telecom infrastructure and provide users with better tools to manage incoming communications.
