Cambodia accuses Thailand of exploiting scam crackdown as cover for aggression

Cambodia's leadership has levelled fresh accusations against Thailand, claiming Bangkok is leveraging regional crackdowns on cybercrime syndicates to justify what Phnom Penh characterizes as aggressive cross-border operations.

Prime Minister Hun Manet made the assertion amid ongoing tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours over their shared frontier. The Cambodian government has sought to distinguish between legitimate law enforcement efforts against transnational scam operations and what it describes as overreach by Thai authorities.

Despite the diplomatic tensions, Hun Manet reiterated Cambodia's commitment to combating organized online fraud. The premier vowed that his government would not permit Cambodian territory to serve as a staging ground or safe harbour for international scam networks that have become increasingly prevalent across Asia.

The dispute reflects broader regional challenges in coordinating responses to cybercrime, which increasingly involves multiple jurisdictions and organized criminal syndicates operating across borders. Both nations have faced mounting pressure from neighbouring countries and international partners to crack down on scam operations, though they differ sharply on the methods and their justifications.
