Cambodian law enforcement agencies have dismantled 972 scam and illegal gambling sites as part of major enforcement operations targeting transnational criminal networks operating within the kingdom. The campaign resulted in the deportation of 23,760 foreign nationals suspected of involvement in online fraud, money laundering, and unlicensed gambling activities.
Regulatory authorities also intensified oversight of the legal gaming sector during the operations, revoking casino licences for 18 establishments and suspending operations at 10 others. The actions underscore Cambodia's commitment to combat the proliferation of illegal online gambling networks that have increasingly attracted criminal syndicates and posed significant risks to both domestic and regional security.
The enforcement drive reflects growing concerns across Southeast Asia regarding the use of border regions and free economic zones as bases for sophisticated scam operations targeting victims across the region. Cambodia has faced particular scrutiny over the years due to reports of scam call centres and illegal gambling hubs operating with limited oversight, prompting the government to enhance regulatory measures and cross-border cooperation with neighbouring countries.
The scale of the crackdown signals an intensified push by Cambodian authorities to address the issue, though regional analysts note that sustained efforts and international coordination remain essential to dismantle entrenched criminal networks. The deportations represent one of the largest enforcement actions of its kind in recent years.
