India is increasingly focused on manufacturing as a cornerstone of its development strategy, with policymakers setting an ambitious target to become a developed economy by 2047. The government believes robust industrial growth is essential to achieving this goal and raising living standards across the nation.
To drive this agenda, New Delhi has unveiled a series of major initiatives aimed at boosting manufacturing capacity and attracting investment. These include the 'Make in India' campaign, which seeks to position the country as a global manufacturing hub, and the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' or 'Self-Reliant India' programme designed to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen domestic production.
The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme represents another key pillar of this strategy, offering financial incentives to companies that increase manufacturing output in priority sectors. These policy measures are intended to accelerate India's industrial momentum and create employment opportunities across the economy.
However, analysts note that India faces significant challenges in closing the gap with established manufacturing powerhouses like China. Factors including infrastructure development, skilled labour availability, and sustained policy implementation will be critical to determining whether India can realise its manufacturing ambitions in the coming decades.
