Can Tho has launched a comprehensive effort to modernize its fishing fleet and eliminate vessels that fail to meet regulatory standards, part of a broader crackdown on illegal fishing practices. Local authorities have instructed port management and inspection agencies to intensify monitoring and prevent non-compliant vessels from departing, tightening controls at a critical chokepoint in Vietnam's fishing industry.
The program centers on supporting fishermen through the decommissioning of older, non-compliant boats while promoting transition to sustainable livelihoods. Officials have also begun guiding fishing operations toward digital adoption, including electronic vessel management systems, digital departure and arrival declarations, and blockchain-based seafood traceability platforms. These measures aim to create transparency throughout the supply chain and reduce opportunities for illegal catch to enter formal markets.
The Can Tho initiative reflects mounting pressure on Vietnamese authorities to address IUU fishing, which has drawn international scrutiny and affected Vietnam's export markets. Similar enforcement actions are underway in neighboring provinces including Dong Thap and Dak Lak, which have stepped up inspections and awareness campaigns, while Tay Ninh has intensified fishing fleet management to address the issue. Analysts say coordinated provincial efforts will be essential to fundamentally transform fishing practices and protect Vietnam's marine resources.
