Canada, India moving beyond reset phase, says High Commissioner

Canada and India are moving well beyond the reset phase in their bilateral relations, according to Christopher Cooter, Canada's High Commissioner to India. Cooter said the current period of reconstruction offers the most favourable environment for both nations to strengthen their ties, marking a significant shift in their 80-year diplomatic history.

"In eight decades of diplomatic relations, there has never been an environment that has drawn them together in the same way," Cooter stated, underscoring the potential for deepened cooperation between the two countries.

The High Commissioner noted that progress has been made on the security dialogue concerning the Hardeep Singh Nijjar killing case, which had strained bilateral relations. He highlighted that India's decision to declare the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organisation has contributed to improving the overall atmosphere between the nations.

The comments reflect a thaw in relations between India and Canada, which had deteriorated following diplomatic tensions earlier this year. Cooter's remarks suggest both countries are committed to moving forward constructively on shared security concerns and broader partnership objectives.
