Canada, India push to conclude trade negotiations by December G20 summit

Canada and India are accelerating efforts to finalise their trade negotiations, with officials from both countries aiming to reach an agreement by the G20 summit scheduled for December 14-15 in Miami.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement on Tuesday during remarks at the United Nations General Assembly, stating that the two nations have committed to concluding the talks within the specified timeframe. "We are making good progress in our trade negotiations with India," Carney said at a news conference.
The Canadian leader also indicated that India has confirmed plans for PM Narendra Modi to visit Canada around the time of the G20 summit, though the exact dates remain to be finalised. The visit would provide an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss trade matters and bilateral relations.
Canada's engagement with India forms part of a broader strategy to reduce its economic dependence on the United States and expand trade partnerships globally. The Canadian government has set an ambitious goal to double non-US trade over the next decade, with India identified as a key market in this diversification effort.
