Canada tightens financial requirements for international student visas

International students seeking to study in Canada must now demonstrate proof of at least CA$23,448 (US$16,952) in annual living expenses under new regulations that came into force on September 1. The requirement applies to all applicants for study permits and represents a significant barrier for prospective students from lower-income backgrounds.

The latest increase follows another substantial hike implemented just one year prior, indicating an accelerating trend in Canada's tightening of international student admission standards. Canadian immigration authorities have cited the need to ensure students can support themselves financially during their studies without placing undue burden on public services.

The financial proof requirement covers living costs excluding tuition fees and is designed to demonstrate that students possess sufficient resources for accommodation, food, transportation, and other essential expenses. Students must provide documentation such as bank statements, sponsor letters, or proof of financial support from family members.

For Vietnamese students and those from other Southeast Asian nations, the rising threshold may create additional challenges in meeting Canadian visa requirements. The increases reflect broader policy shifts as Canada reassesses its international student intake following years of rapid growth in the sector.
