Canadian bison herd in Banff thrives after reintroduction programme
A wildlife restoration initiative in Canada's Banff National Park has successfully restored plains bison to the region after a gap of more than a century. The reintroduced population has grown substantially, signalling the success of conservation efforts in restoring native species to their historical habitats.

Parks Canada launched an ambitious bison reintroduction programme in Banff National Park in 2017, beginning with the release of 26 plains bison into the protected mountain landscape. The initiative marked a significant milestone in wildlife restoration, reestablishing a species that had effectively disappeared from the region.
The herd's growth trajectory has exceeded expectations. Starting from an initial population of sixteen animals that survived the early stages, the bison population expanded to approximately eighty individuals by autumn 2022—representing a robust 33 per cent average annual growth rate during the five-year monitoring period.
Ecological assessments revealed that the reintroduced bison adapted successfully to the mountainous terrain of Banff. The animals demonstrated unexpected behavioural flexibility, preferring higher elevations for foraging and integrating well into the park's ecosystem. Natural mortality rates remained remarkably low throughout the pilot phase, with only two deaths recorded among the expanding population.
The successful reintroduction underscores the potential for restoring large herbivores to protected areas where historical populations have been eliminated. Parks Canada's data suggests that with appropriate management and monitoring, native species can flourish in their original habitats, contributing to ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation in the region.
