Canal cleanup creates roadside hazard as silt piles mount

A canal desilting programme intended to improve drainage has sparked safety concerns among residents as accumulated sediment sits exposed along city thoroughfares. The buildup of silt and sludge has attracted rats and other pests, with residents reporting discovery of snake skins and other animal remains in the debris heaps.

The issue has become a focal point of local grievances, with community members questioning the management of material extracted during maintenance work. While removal of sediment is essential for canal function and flood prevention, the temporary storage of waste on roadside areas has created conditions residents say pose health and sanitation risks to neighbourhoods.

City authorities had previously acknowledged the concern, with Municipal Mayor R. Priya stating that leaving silt unattended on roadsides would undermine the benefits of the desilting exercise itself. Officials face pressure to develop a more efficient disposal and removal schedule that balances the need for canal maintenance with public health considerations.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges in urban infrastructure management, where essential maintenance work must be coordinated with waste management protocols to prevent creating new public hazards in the course of addressing existing infrastructure issues.
