Canara Bank Q2 net profit rises 8.4% despite treasury income slump

Canara Bank's second quarter earnings reflected mixed performance, with the public sector lender posting a net profit of Rs 5,175 crore compared to Rs 4,774 crore in the year-ago period. The improvement was underpinned by a robust 20.4% expansion in net interest income, demonstrating the strength of the bank's core lending operations and deposit base.

The quarter also benefited from lower provisioning requirements, which provided additional support to the bottom line. However, this growth trajectory was partially offset by a significant contraction in treasury income, which plummeted 68.5% year-on-year, reflecting challenging conditions in debt markets and reduced gains from the bank's investment portfolio.

The divergent performance across revenue streams underscores the challenges facing Indian lenders in navigating volatile financial markets while managing traditional lending operations. Net interest income growth, propelled by higher lending volumes and improved margins, remained the primary growth driver for Canara Bank during the quarter.

The results highlight the lender's reliance on core banking operations as treasury income remains subdued. Analysts will be watching whether the bank can sustain its net interest income momentum in coming quarters amid evolving interest rate dynamics and competitive pressures in the lending market.
