CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur — City authorities released a female green sea turtle weighing approximately 80 kilograms into the waters off Candon on Tuesday as part of ongoing efforts to protect the endangered marine species. The local government, led by Mayor Eric Dario Singson, coordinated the release under its Pawikan Development Project, which focuses on the conservation and rehabilitation of green sea turtles known locally as pawikan.
The initiative reflects growing concerns about declining sea turtle populations in Philippine waters due to habitat loss, poaching, and accidental capture in fishing nets. By returning healthy specimens to their natural environment, the city government aims to bolster wild populations and raise community awareness about marine conservation.
The Pawikan Development Project represents part of broader efforts across the Philippines to safeguard endangered sea turtles and their marine ecosystems. Candon City's commitment to the program underscores the importance of local government involvement in environmental protection and wildlife management in the region.
