CANDON, Ilocos Sur — Facing potential crop losses from El Niño weather patterns, the city government of Candon has initiated an emergency diesel subsidy program targeting local rice farmers. The initiative aims to reduce operational costs during a period of heightened climate vulnerability in the agricultural sector.

Under the program, qualified rice farmers will receive 20 liters of subsidized diesel fuel distributed in October. The measure is designed to sustain farming operations that depend heavily on fuel for irrigation systems, machinery, and transportation during the critical planting and harvesting seasons.

El Niño-induced drought conditions pose a significant threat to rice production across the Philippines, potentially reducing yields and increasing operational expenses for farmers already facing rising input costs. Agricultural officials have warned of prolonged dry spells that could strain water resources essential for rice cultivation in the region.

The subsidy represents one of several interventions local governments have implemented to support farmers during climate-related challenges. Similar assistance programs have been rolled out in other farming communities across the Ilocos region to cushion the economic impact of adverse weather conditions.
