Cargo ship sinks after mine strike in Strait of Hormuz, 2,500 containers lost

A cargo ship carrying 2,500 containers sank in the Strait of Hormuz after striking a mine Tuesday morning, marking a significant maritime incident in one of the world's most critical shipping corridors. The explosion occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time, tearing a large breach in the vessel's hull.

The force of the blast caused rapid water ingress into the ship's compartments. According to accounts of the incident, the vessel went down within minutes of the explosion, leaving no time for cargo salvage operations. All 2,500 containers aboard were lost to the sea as the ship descended.

The vessel was in transit from the Middle East toward Asia with a full cargo load when the mine detonation occurred. The incident has raised fresh concerns about maritime security and navigation hazards in the strategically vital waterway, through which a significant portion of global oil and trade flows annually. The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, has been the site of multiple maritime incidents in recent years, including previous reports of mine placements and vessel strikes.
