Cashfree, a leading payments platform serving Indian merchants, has introduced AI agents aimed at automating critical payment operations and recovering significant lost revenue. The technology targets three key pain points: abandoned carts that represent potential lost sales, failed payment attempts that frustrate customers, and dispute management that consumes operational resources.
The company estimates the addressable opportunity at Rs 20,000 crore in gross merchandise value currently lost across Indian e-commerce and digital payment ecosystems. By deploying intelligent agents to systematically follow up on abandoned transactions and retry failed payments, merchants can recover a portion of this revenue without proportionally increasing operational costs.
The AI agents are designed to operate with minimal merchant intervention, automating workflows that typically require dedicated customer service teams. The system handles customer communication, payment retry logic, and dispute resolution workflows, allowing merchant teams to focus on higher-value business activities.
The rollout reflects broader industry trends toward automation in payments infrastructure. As Indian e-commerce growth accelerates and transaction volumes increase, merchants face mounting operational complexity in managing payment lifecycle issues. Cashfree's AI-driven approach positions automation as a cost-effective solution for merchants of all sizes to improve conversion rates and reduce revenue leakage.
