Caste tensions flare over burial rights in Tamil Nadu village
Dominant-caste villagers in Erode district blocked members of a Scheduled Caste community from burying an elderly man in a common cemetery, escalating long-standing social divisions in the area.

A burial dispute in an Erode district village has laid bare persistent caste tensions, after dominant-caste residents prevented Scheduled Caste community members from laying to rest a 90-year-old man on October 5. When the deceased's family and community members attempted to take the body to the common burial ground, village residents confronted them and refused access to the cemetery, according to reports from the area. The confrontation marked another instance of caste-based discrimination in cemetery access, a practice documented across rural Tamil Nadu despite legal protections. Witnesses said the SC community members were humiliated during the confrontation and subsequently warned to refrain from seeking work or assistance from the dominant-caste households in future. The incident reflects ongoing challenges in implementing burial ground access rights, which remain contested in several villages across South India despite statutory protections under the Constitution and state regulations. Local authorities have yet to issue formal statements regarding the incident or any action taken against those involved in the obstruction.
