CBI arrests mastermind in major cyber fraud targeting US nationals

The Central Bureau of Investigation has made a significant breakthrough in a sprawling cyber fraud case, arresting a primary accused involved in orchestrating an illegal call centre network that targeted US nationals. The accused operated the fraudulent enterprise from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, since 2024, utilising sophisticated impersonation tactics to extract funds from victims across the United States.

According to the CBI investigation, the syndicate posed as officers from various US federal agencies, convincing victims that they faced legal complications or outstanding financial obligations. Using this deception, the perpetrators coerced victims into transferring substantial sums through wire transfers and digital payment platforms. The investigation revealed that the operation resulted in cumulative losses exceeding $7.21 million across multiple victims.

The Ahmedabad-based call centre functioned as a sophisticated fraud operation, with operatives trained in American cultural nuances and administrative procedures to enhance the credibility of their impersonations. The CBI's cyber crime division traced the operation's financial transactions and communication networks, ultimately identifying and apprehending the key accused.

This arrest marks a crucial step in dismantling the fraudulent network and represents enhanced cooperation between Indian law enforcement and international cyber crime prevention efforts. The CBI has indicated that investigations are ongoing to identify additional members of the syndicate and trace further proceeds from the illegal operation.
