CBSE awaits sanction to pay vendor for glitch-ridden marking system

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is awaiting a sanction order to process payment to Coempt Edu Teck, the company engaged to develop its on-screen marking system (OSM) for board examinations. The payment authorization has not yet been received, according to officials overseeing the matter.
The OSM was rolled out for the first time during CBSE's class 12 board examinations in 2026, but the implementation was marred by technical glitches that affected the examination process. The system's underperformance during its inaugural use has raised questions about the platform's readiness for large-scale deployment.
The delay in processing vendor payment comes as the CBSE evaluates the performance and reliability of the system. Officials are yet to issue formal sanction for remunerating Coempt Edu Teck despite the completion of the contracted services during the examination cycle.
The incident highlights challenges in implementing digital examination infrastructure on a national scale. The CBSE, which oversees education for millions of students across India, has been transitioning toward technology-enabled examination and evaluation processes in recent years.
