CCI approves KKR-linked entity's investment in Gentari Renewables India

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has cleared the proposed investment by Sapphire US HoldCo in Gentari Renewables India, removing a key regulatory hurdle for the transaction. Gentari Renewables India, backed by Malaysian energy giant Petronas, operates in the renewable energy sector and has emerged as a significant player in India's clean energy transition.

Sapphire US HoldCo, which is linked to global investment firm KKR, sought regulatory approval for its stake acquisition in the renewable energy company. The CCI's clearance signals confidence in the investment structure and its compliance with competition law provisions.

While the competition regulator has granted its approval, the commercial terms of the investment—including the stake percentage and valuation—have not been disclosed publicly. Such confidentiality clauses are common in cross-border investment deals, particularly those involving strategic energy assets.

The approval comes as foreign investment in India's renewable energy sector continues to accelerate, driven by the nation's ambitious clean energy targets and a supportive policy environment. Petronas and its subsidiaries have been expanding their renewable energy footprint in India as part of their global energy transition strategy.
