The Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), housed on the seventh floor of the Department of Labour Secretariat Building in Colombo 05, has been formally named as a place of detention under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act, No. 48 of 1979.
The designation was formalized through Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2509/11, published on October 6, 2026. The notification establishes the CCIB facility as an authorized detention location for individuals held under the provisions of Sri Lanka's Prevention of Terrorism Act.
The Prevention of Terrorism Act remains one of the country's key pieces of counter-terrorism legislation, though its application and use have been subjects of ongoing debate regarding procedural safeguards and detainee rights. The formal designation of additional detention facilities under the Act reflects the government's framework for managing terrorism-related cases.
The CCIB, a key investigative body under Sri Lanka's police structure, has previously been involved in high-profile criminal investigations. The designation as an official PTA detention site clarifies the legal status of the facility for holding suspects during terrorism-related inquiries.
