CCMB researchers create genetic tools to study tuberculosis mechanisms

Researchers at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad have unveiled a new genetic toolkit designed to deepen understanding of how tuberculosis bacteria function at the molecular level. The collection comprises 40 shuttle vectors equipped with fluorescent markers that enable proteins to be visualized under a microscope, providing scientists with enhanced capability to observe and analyze bacterial processes in real time.

The development of this toolkit represents a significant advancement for TB research in India and the region. By making key proteins fluorescent, researchers can track their movement, interactions, and behaviour within the bacterial cell, offering insights that were previously difficult to obtain through conventional research methods.

Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge in South Asia, with India accounting for a substantial proportion of global TB cases. Better tools for understanding the disease's molecular mechanisms could accelerate the development of more effective diagnostic methods, drug therapies, and treatment strategies.

The shuttle vectors developed by CCMB scientists are expected to be made available to the broader research community, potentially catalyzing collaborative efforts across laboratories in India and neighbouring countries. Such tools are essential for fundamental research that underpins innovation in tuberculosis control and treatment development.
