CEA charts flexible power operations to handle solar generation surge
India's Central Electricity Authority has proposed dynamic ramping protocols and two-shift thermal plant operations to manage grid stability amid rising renewable energy integration. The measures aim to optimise conventional power generation as solar capacity continues expanding across the country.

The Central Electricity Authority has outlined a strategy to enhance grid flexibility by adjusting thermal power plant operations in response to fluctuating solar generation patterns throughout the day. Under the proposed framework, conventional power stations would ramp down to minimum technical levels during peak solar generation hours, reducing their output when renewable sources are contributing maximum capacity to the grid.
As evening approaches and solar generation declines, thermal plants would ramp up to meet evening demand peaks, ensuring adequate power supply during this critical period. This dynamic operation model is designed to reduce inefficiencies associated with conventional plants operating at sub-optimal capacity factors while maintaining grid stability.
The CEA has also recommended implementing two-shift operational schedules for thermal generating stations to align with the country's renewable energy transition. This approach would allow for planned maintenance and optimised staffing patterns while ensuring plants remain available during periods of high demand and low solar output.
The proposals reflect India's evolving approach to managing an increasingly complex power system as renewable energy capacity expands. By introducing flexible ramping protocols and adaptive operational schedules, grid operators aim to achieve better cost efficiency while supporting the nation's clean energy ambitions. These measures are expected to be implemented across India's thermal generation fleet in coordination with regional load dispatch centres.
