Census 2027: Four Poll-Bound States Begin Population Count From December

The Census 2027 exercise will begin its population enumeration phase in four politically significant states from December 1, the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed. These states, which are scheduled to hold assembly elections, will be the first to undergo the comprehensive population count as part of the decennial census process.

The remaining regions across India are expected to commence enumeration from February 2025, subject to ground conditions and administrative readiness. The staggered approach allows census operations to proceed in phases, ensuring comprehensive coverage while managing logistical challenges.

Snow-bound and geographically difficult regions are likely to be exempted from the initial enumeration schedule, with provisions for delayed enumeration in subsequent phases. The Ministry indicated that the final timeline for these areas would be determined based on ground accessibility and weather conditions.

The Census 2027 represents India's 16th decennial census and is a critical exercise for collecting demographic data across the nation. The phased enumeration approach aims to ensure accurate data collection while accommodating regional variations in terrain, climate, and accessibility.

All census operations are being conducted in accordance with the Census Act, 1948, with extensive training provided to enumerators and supervisory staff across participating states.
