Census 2027 Phase Two: 34 Lakh Enumerators Trained on Expanded Questions

Four states—Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Punjab—are gearing up for the second phase of Census 2027, which will roll out on December 1. The exercise will involve approximately 34 lakh enumerators deployed across these regions to collect information from households using an expanded questionnaire and digital data entry systems.

Field trainers are currently briefing enumerators on a set of 40 questions that will require more detailed and sensitive interviews compared to previous census operations. The expanded questionnaire covers several demographic and socioeconomic parameters including caste, religion, access to Aadhaar identification, and parental information. The inclusion of these questions marks a significant expansion in the scope of data collection for the 2027 census cycle.

The training programme underscores the logistical complexity of the census exercise, with authorities focusing on ensuring enumerators are adequately prepared to handle sensitive questions with appropriate protocols. Digital data entry has been integrated into the process to streamline information collection and improve accuracy. The simultaneous training of such a large workforce across multiple states reflects the administrative challenge involved in conducting a nationwide census.

The second phase's rollout in poll-bound states comes as India continues its decennial census process, which serves as a critical data source for policy planning, resource allocation, and demographic analysis at both state and national levels.
